The C-25 , also known as Eje Transversal , is a motorway ( autovía ) in Spain that starts at the Lleida junction and ends on the Girona coast .

Sections

The motorway starts at the border with Aragon (km 0) and ends after 244 kilometers in Caldes de Malavella . There the route forks: the A-2 (Madrid – La Junquera), the AP-7 (Algeciras – La Junquera) and the C-65 (Girona – Sant Feliu de Guixols).

The motorway is divided into three sections:

It is part of the state A-2 between kilometers 444 and 518 ( Aragón - Cervera border ) . The next section, Cervera – Caldes de Malavella, serves primarily to bypass Barcelona . It branches off from the A-2 at both ends. There is a connection to the AP-7 at the western end of the motorway . The Cervera – Manresa section is 44 kilometers long and runs mostly through the city of Rajadell . There are a total of 13 exits and 20 viaducts here. The Manresa - Vic section is 43 kilometers long . There are also 13 exits and driveways, 12 viaducts and 3 bridges.

history

The first ideas for the Eje Transversal date back to 1935, when Victoriano Muñoz Oms wrote down the first plans for a connection between Girona and Lleida , via Tàrrega , Cervera , Manresa and Vic . It wasn't until 50 years later that Muñoz Oms' idea was included in the street plan. The main part of the route - also known as the Eix in the population - opened on December 12, 1987. The section between Santa Maria d'Oló and Vic was opened in 1997. The construction was carried out on behalf of the Generalitat de Catalunya , which owns the route.

The original aim was three:

  • They wanted to establish a fast connection between northeast Catalonia (Girona, Figueres , La Jonquera ) and western Catalonia ( Lleida , Cervera ) and bypass the metropolis of Barcelona.
  • They wanted to build a fast connection for the central Catalan cities of Vic , Manresa and Ripoll .
  • A general goal, the traffic that does not necessarily have to go to Barcelona, ​​as possible outside of Barcelona.

Despite these goals, the Eix was not built as a motorway, but only as a highway . The expected traffic jams followed. Therefore, the upgrade to the Autovia began in 2007 and was completed in 2011.

future

A budget of 752 million euros has been available since 2007 for the necessary construction work on the motorway; these are expected to be completed in 2040. Currently (as of 2017) a toll of nine euros per truck is collected. It is estimated that 20,000 cars will use the route per day in 2019, 21% (~ 4,000) of which are trucks.

Another goal is to comprehensively improve safety on the route. During the 14 years in which only one lane was available, there were 208 deaths, an average of 15 accidents a year. The most deaths occurred in 2007 (25) and the fewest in 2011 (4).
