Since the middle of the 19th century, the community has recorded continuous population growth, which was not interrupted by the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture .
economy
In the past, the inhabitants lived mainly as a self-sufficient living from agriculture , which also included growing wine and keeping cattle . In the 19th century, the community developed into an important wine-growing region , but after the phylloxera crisis, agriculture is now predominantly again . However, viticulture again plays an important role. Artés now has a wine cooperative with a history of over 100 years and two private wineries and is one of a total of 26 communities that are allowed to market the wine produced - and in the case of Artés also cava - under the denomination Pla de Bages . As early as the 19th century there were several textile manufacturers in Artés; Meanwhile, however, the focus of local industry is on metal processing .
history
A document from 938 proves the existence of three Neolithic megalithic tombs (dolmen); Finds from Iberian , Roman and Visigothic times have also been made. The place Artés is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 889, when the reconquest ( reconquista ) and repopulation ( repoblación ) of the area under Borrell of Osona and Wilfried I of Barcelona , which was almost depopulated after the arrival of Islam, had already been completed.
Attractions
Despite its long history, the imposing place has hardly any sights. Nothing can be seen of the castle ( castell ) built at the highest point in the village .
- Only the lower part of the bell tower ( campanar ) remains of the former parish church of Santa Maria ; the upper part was added in the 19th century.
- The forecourt of the church was partially filled in and is secured by an embankment wall lined with blind arches .
- Due to the ongoing population growth, the neo-Romanesque Església de Santa Maria was built in the lower town in the 19th century , the facade of which is decorated with a triumphal arch motif .
- In the vicinity of the village there are several listed country estates ( masies ), all of which are privately owned and only in some cases function as wineries .
