Dayna Sean Stephens (born August 1, 1978 ) is an American jazz musician ( tenor and baritone saxophone , also double bass ).

Live and act

Stephens grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area , where he began playing the saxophone at the age of 13. He attended Berkeley High School before studying at the Berklee School of Music and then at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz until 2002 .

In addition to his own formations, he worked with Kenny Barron , Taylor Eigsti , Julian Lage , Eric Harland , Ambrose Akinmusire and Gerald Clayton . Until 2013, he released the four albums The Timeless Now (2007), Today Is Tomorrow (2012), That Nepenthetic Place (2013, with Ambrose Akinmusire, Jaleel Shaw , Joe Sanders and Gretchen Parlato ) and I'll Take My under his own name Chances ( Criss Cross Jazz , 2013). In 2014 the album Peace (Sunnyside) followed, on which Larry Grenadier , Julian Lage, Brad Mehldau and Eric Harland contributed; 2017 Gratitude (Contagious Music). In 2018 he worked on David Berkman's album Six of One .

In the field of jazz he was involved in 22 recording sessions between 2000 and 2013, including a. also with Gretchen Parlato, Linda Oh , BJ Papa and Phil Ranelin . Stephens has focal segmental glomerulosclerosis .
