Jaleel Shaw
Jaleel Shaw (* 11. February 1978 ) is an American jazz - saxophonist and composer .

Jaleel Shaw grew up in Philadelphia , where he took lessons from Rayburn Wright, Robert Landham and Lovette Hines. With funding u. a. through Byard Lancaster and Grover Washington Jr. he attended the High School for Creative & Performing Arts ; he then graduated from George Washington High School and on a scholarship from Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he completed his studies in music education and performance in 2000. In 2002 he received his Masters at the Manhattan School of Music and won the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition . Since then he has played in the Roy Haynes Quartet, in the Mingus Big Band and in the Count Basie Big Band , in the Either / Orchestra as well as with Robert Glasper and Jeremy Pelt .
In 2004 he made his debut album Perspective for Fresh Sound Records , the opening track of which won the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award . In 2008 he released the album Optimism on his own label Changu Records ; he also recorded with EJ Strickland ( On This Day ). In 2012 he performed with the Beka Gochiashvili Quintet at the side of Lionel Loueke , Victor Bailey and Lenny White at the Black Sea Jazz Festival in Batumi . In 2019 he plays in a trio with Dezron Douglas and EJ Strickland; He also leads a quartet that includes Sullivan Fortner (piano), Ben Street (bass) and Johnathan Blake (drums).
According to Richard Cook and Brian Morton , Shaw's playing is influenced by John Coltrane and Bobby Watson .
