Sullivan Fortner

Sullivan Joseph Fortner (* 1986 in New Orleans ) is an American jazz musician (piano, composition ).

Live and act

Fortner, who grew up in New Orleans, began playing the piano at the age of four, inspired by church music. He studied up to the bachelor's degree at Oberlin Conservatory of Music , and then his master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music to complete

In 2009 Fortner was part of Stefon Harris' band . He also worked in the quintet of Roy Hargrove and supported the saxophonist Justin Robinson in the recording studio. He continued to work with Nicholas Payton , Billy Hart , Gary Bartz , Marcus Belgrave , Peter Bernstein and Dave Liebman . 2018/19 with Lage Lund , Yotam Silberstein , Aaron Seeber and Nick Hempton .

In 2015 Fortner founded his own quartet, which included saxophonist Tivon Pennicott, bassist Ameen Saleem and drummer Jeremy Clemons. The singer Roberta Gambarini accompanied his quartet, which has already played several times in Europe, in autumn 2016.

Prizes and awards

Fortner won the 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship in Jazz from the American Pianists Association . At the Down Beat Critics Poll 2020 he was the winner as Rising Star in the Arranger of the Year category .
