Serafima Iassonowna Leontowskaja , née Blonskaja ( Russian Серафима Иасоновна Блонская , born October 3, 1870 in Verkhnyodniprovsk , Russian Empire ; died August 9, 1947 in Taganrog , Soviet Union ) was a Russian painter and art teacher.

Career

Five years after her birth, Serafima Blonskaja's family moved to Taganrog in 1870 . Her father, Iasson Iwanowitsch Blonski, was a lawyer. Her mother was a professor of medicine at Kharkiv University .

In 1887 Serafima Blonskaya graduated from Mariinskaya Gymnasium with a gold medal. She began studying at the Mykola Buracheks Art School in Kiev , which she graduated in 1891. From 1892 to 1900 Serafima Blonskaja studied at the Russian Art Academy in Saint Petersburg . Blonskaja was honored in 1900 for her graduation picture "The Girls (Palm Sunday)" with the title "Artist". She received a public scholarship to perfect her skills in Italy. She learned Italian there and spoke and wrote it freely until the end of her life.

In 1909 Blonskaya returned to Taganrog. With her husband, the painter Alexander Michailowitsch Leontowski (1865–1928), they founded an art school in Taganrog in 1910. Drawing and painting were taught there, as well as anatomy, perspective and art history courses. Orphans and particularly gifted children were taught free of charge. After the death of her husband in 1928, the school was closed. Serafima Blonskaya taught at home. From the 1930s Blonskaya worked in the Vsekochudoschnik artists' association . From 1944 she worked in the Taganrog department of the Art Fund of the USSR . Most of Serafima Blonskaja's paintings are exhibited in the Taganrog Art Museum.

Serafima Blonskaja died in Taganrog in 1947 and was buried in the Old Cemetery in Taganrog . In the 1990s, a children's art school in Taganrog was named after Serafima Blonskaya. The city of Taganrog erected a memorial on her grave in 2010.
