Marcus Belgrave

Marcus Belgrave (born June 12, 1936 in Chester , Pennsylvania , † May 24, 2015 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) was an American modern jazz trumpeter .

Live and act

Belgrave, who worked in Detroit all his life , played with Ray Charles when he was 18 . He later worked with Max Roach , Charles Mingus , Ella Fitzgerald , Bud Powell , Tony Bennett , Sammy Davis Jr. , Dizzy Gillespie, and John Sinclair . Since 1988 he has been a permanent member of Wynton Marsalis ' Lincoln Jazz Orchestra. He can be heard on numerous jazz albums and has been the inspiration and supporter of musicians of the younger generation such as Kenny Garrett , Regina Carter , James Carter , Geri Allen , Bob Hurst and Carlos McKinney . He was involved in recordings by Charles Mingus, Gunther Schuller , George Gruntz , Geri Allen, Carl Craig , Cecil Payne and David Murray , but has also worked as a studio musician for Motown Records , Blue Note Records and Tribe .

Belgrave, who was married to singer Joan Bow Belgrave, taught at the Stanford Jazz Workshop and was visiting professor at the Oberlin Conservatory in the 2000s .

Marcus Belgrave was named Kresge Eminent Artist of the Year 2009, an honor that was accompanied by prize money of $ 50,000; the award honored both his life as an artist and his activities as a teacher.
