Damien Broderick
Damien Francis Broderick (born April 22, 1944 in Melbourne , Australia) is an Australian author who writes science fiction and popular science books. The term virtual reality is sometimes said to have been used for the first time in Broderick's science fiction novel The Judas Mandala .
Broderick holds a PhD in Literature from Deakin University in Australia, writing his dissertation on comparative semiotics in scientific, literary and science fiction textuality .
Damien Broderick lives in Melbourne and Lockhart , Texas , among others . He is married to Barbara Lamar. He also works as a science fiction editor for the Australian popular science magazine Cosmos .

Four of Broderick's novels have won the Ditmar Award (including the book Transmitters , which received a separate award as a non-science fiction work). The first novel, The Dreaming Dragons, was runner-up for the Campbell Award for Best Novel. In November 2003, Broderick received a two-year (2004 and 2005) scholarship from the Australia Council for the Arts to write novels on the Technological Singularity . In 2005 he received the Distinguished Scholarship Award from the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts .
Broderick's best-known scientific works are The Spike (1997, revised 2001), a scientific book on the technological singularity, and The Last Mortal Generation (1999), in which he writes about radically elongated but still youthful phases of life.
His novel The Hunger of Time (2004, with Rory Barnes) was published as an e-book and book-on-demand . His more recent studies x, y, z, t: Dimensions of Science Fiction (2004) and Ferocious Minds: Polymathy and the New Enlightenment (2005) have also been published as book-on-demand. The covers of The Hunger of Time and x, y, z, t: Dimensions of Science Fiction were designed by the Swedish transhumanist Anders Sandberg , as was the anthology Earth is but a Star , in which Broderick summarizes various science fiction stories that all concerned with the distant future.
His recent novels include Godplayers (2005), which was named Locus ' annual Recommended Book List , and K-Machines (2006), which received the 2007 Aurealis Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. Also, does the comic I Suppose a Root's Out of the Question? A Comedy of Bad Manners (2007), which he wrote with Rory Barnes. He also wrote the science fiction thriller Post Mortal Syndrome with his wife, Barbara Lamar, which was published in Cosmos magazine .
Broderick also wrote several radio plays, including settings of his own works as well as those of other authors. His play Schrödinger's Dog , which was first broadcast in 1995, won the Prix Italia . The resulting short story was selected for Gardner Dozoi's Year's Best Science Fiction .
