Mike Ashley (Author)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Raymond Donald Ashley (born October 1, 1948 in Southall , Middlesex ) is an English bibliographer , author and editor of science fiction , fantasy and crime novels .

Ahleys is considered an expert on the history of science fiction and science fiction magazines in particular. His first relevant publication was the four-volume anthology The History of the Science Fiction Magazine , "more of a critical study than an anthology" due to extensive introductions and supplementary bibliographies. Accordingly, his now four-volume Story of the Science-Fiction Magazines , for whose second volume Transformations Ashley was nominated for the Hugo Award in 2006, can be seen as a continuation and extension of this first work. In addition to this first anthology series, Ashley is the editor of numerous other anthologies on a wide variety of genres and topics, especially over three dozen volumes of the Mammoth Book series. Ashley sees himself only as an editor and anthologist on the side, the main thing for him is his work as a researcher, bibliographer and lexicographer. It is also for this work that he was particularly recognized, for example he was awarded the Bram Stoker Award in 1996 together with William G. Contento for the Supernatural Index and in 2003 he received the Edgar Allan Poe Award for the Mammoth Encyclopedia of Modern Crime Fiction .

Ashley sees the roots of his fascination for fantasy and his extensive work as a bibliographer in his youth. His father used to tell him stories from HG Wells and others on long walks - albeit mostly without naming the author or title - and Ashley remembers having spent long hours later trying to determine the sources of these stories. One author in particular kept him busy for decades, first as a reader and then as a biographer. In 1987, Ashley published a first bio-bibliographical work on Algernon Blackwood and in 2001 the first comprehensive biography of this author, Starlight Man: The Extraordinary Life of Algernon Blackwood (in the US edition as Algernon Blackwood: An Extraordinary Life ).

Finally , we should mention Ashley's extensive contributions to the Enyclopedia of Fantasy, edited by John Clute and John Grant , and to the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction , edited by Clute and Peter Nicholls , to the 3rd edition of which Ashley contributed practically all articles on magazines and journals.

As a SF fan of the first generation, publisher of the Fanzines Plinth , … And Behold , Cushi Came , Monolith , Saliromania , Xeron and Info for the BSFA , as a collector, author and detail-obsessed bibliographer, Ashley was accepted into First in 2008 Fandom Hall of Fame honored.

Ashley was a local government official until he retired. He lives in Chatham , Kent .
