history

The oldest mention of Riedenburg is in the founding document of Altenburg Abbey from July 25, 1144 together with the first mention of the parish of Horn. The name Rietenburg (Riedenburg) is derived from the personal name Rieto , after which the castle got its name. In 1209 a "Kunradus de Rietenburc" and 1232 a "Heinrich von Rietenburch" are mentioned in a document. The church historian Alois Plesser assumes the existence of the castle only until the 13th century, according to other reports it is mentioned in documents until the 15th century. In the tithe directory of the Passau St. Nikolei Monastery from around 1318-1320, Riedenburg was named as the parish center, but the settlement only consisted of the church and ancillary buildings.

While the Protestant faith became more and more prevalent in the parish of Horn from the sixties of the 16th century and Horn finally became one of the centers of Protestantism in the country, Protestantism could hardly gain a foothold in the parish of Riedenburg.

In 1594, no parishioners are listed near Riedenburg; this is a sign that the place was already deserted and consisted only of the parish church and the outbuildings.

In 1694, the Riedenburg parish was merged with the Horn parish after the Altenburg monastery had taken over the parish in 1689. From 1694 the parish priest of Horn was also the priest of Riedenburg, and a second co- worker was assigned to him to look after the parish of Riedenburg . In the Riedenburg church, a service was still held and the sacraments were donated, and the registers continued.

On October 7, 1783, Adalbert Jäger made the last entry in the death register, the final sentence reads: “In 1783 Riedenburg ceased to be a parish.” About the end of the Riedenburg parish, Plesser wrote : “In 1783 the parish was abolished and instead one new parish established in Maria Dreieichen. ”Two baptismal records, two marriage records and two death records from the period 1667–1784 have been preserved for the Riedenburg parish.

A register from 1783 contains eight charities , the annual not very high income was partly divided between the parish vicar, the church and the sacristan. The number of soul masses to be read annually is entered under the heading “Obligations connected with it”, usually one or two masses.

The well-attended pilgrimage church of Maria Dreieichen - at the height of baroque piety in 1751/1752, around 50,000 pilgrims from Lower Austria, Bohemia and Hungary made a pilgrimage to Maria Dreieichen - was under the parish of Riedenburg. But from 1740 it was looked after by its own priest. After the parish of Riedenburg was abolished according to the parish order of Joseph II , Maria Dreieichen was raised to the parish with the places Mold (formerly Riedenburg-Horn) as well as Mörtersdorf and Zaingrub , which had previously belonged to the parish of Gars. That is why the Niklaskapelle in Riedenburg had to be desecrated in 1786 , whereupon the grounds were sold and the land register was given to Altenburg Abbey on February 18, 1789. Church, rectory and sacristan's house disappeared almost without a trace. The archivist of the Altenburg Abbey, Father Gregor Schweighofer, explains it as follows: "After the construction of the great pilgrimage church in Dreieichen, the Altenburg Abbey worked purposefully to achieve the parish of Mold and Mörtersdorf after Dreieichen." The abbot said it even more clearly : "The Riedenburg parish was sacrificed for Maria Dreieichen."
