Justin Jay Robinson (* 14. August 1968 in Manhattan , New York ) is an American jazz - saxophonist and flutist of hard bop .

Live and act

Robinson, whose parents both play the saxophone and clarinet, learned saxophone at the age of thirteen and attended the High School of Music and Arts (LaGuardia High School) in New York City . Influenced by the music of Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean , he switched to the alto saxophone. He first appeared at the Village Gate on the First Generations of Jazz show . From 1984 to 1986 he was a member of the McDonald's High School Jazz Band , to be active with Philip and Winard Harper in their formation Harper Brothers at the age of 18 ; In 1988 Betty Carter brought him into her band. From the beginning of the 1990s a. a. he played with Cecil Brooks III , Abbey Lincoln , Diana Ross , Little Jimmy Scott , the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Band, Kate Higgins , Sam Newsome and especially with Roy Hargrove , both in his Big Band and in its quintet. In 1998 worked on the Roland Kirk project Haunted Melodies . After his record debut Justin Time (Verve, 1991), on which Bobby Watson , Eddie Henderson , Kenny Barron and Gary Bartz participated, the album Challenge was released in 1998 , on which he a. a. was accompanied by his childhood friend Stephen Scott . Robinson lives in New Jersey . He currently (2019) leads a quartet that includes Sharp Radway (piano), Alexander Claffy (bass) and Willie Jones III (drums).
