Stephen Scott (born March 13, 1969 in Queens , NY) is an American jazz pianist of modern and mainstream jazz .

Career

He began playing the piano at the age of five and made rapid progress, so that at the age of twelve he began taking private lessons at the Juilliard School of the Performing Arts . The basis lies in classical piano playing, but reggae and salsa (from the radio) influenced him from an early age . He found jazz at the age of 18, which Scott attributes to saxophonist Justin Robinson . Shortly thereafter he played in the band of the talented singer Betty Carter , and soon after began to work and record with musicians such as the Harper Brothers, Wynton Marsalis , Bobby Watson and Bobby Hutcherson . From 1991 he recorded mainstream albums for the Verve label ; he uses mixed line-ups from other "Young Lions" and veteran musicians such as Joe Henderson , Ron Carter or Elvin Jones . In 1995 he played on Joe Henderson's hit album Lush Life .

His album The Beautiful Thing emphasized Latin and soul influences beyond a neobop tradition. With a technically brilliant style, he very carefully takes into account the tradition of the jazz piano .
