Alexander Claffy

Alexander "Alex" Claffy (born June 9, 1992 ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass ) of modern jazz and post bop .

Alexander Claffy, who comes from the Philadelphia area, is the son of a pianist and a singer, which means he was surrounded by music from an early age. He first played the electric bass before switching to the double bass. He first took lessons from bassist Mike Boone , then from Dwayne Burno , Ben Wolfe , Gregg August and Ron Carter . He graduated from The New School .

From the early 2010s he worked a. a. with Orrin Evans , with whom the first recordings were made in 2013 ( It Was Beauty ; Criss Cross Jazz , 2013); he also played with Johnny O'Neal , Louis Hayes , Russell Malone , Wallace Roney , Christian Scott , Jim Snidero and Sean Jones . He has also appeared on the recordings of David Gibson , Nancy Harrow , Sandy Taylor, John Petrucelli, Ben Eunson, Benny Benack III and JD Allen III . In the field of jazz, he was involved in twelve recording sessions between 2013 and 2018.

Claffy released the album Standards: What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life? before, on which u. a. Kurt Rosenwinkel and Dave Kikoski had contributed. He then interprets pop songs and standards such as Lennon-McCartney's " Michelle ", Duke Pearson's "Is That So?", Cole Porter's " Just One of Those Things " and "You Must Believe in Spring". He currently appears in New York as a member of the bands of Charles Owens , Sharel Cassity , Benny Benack, Itamar Borochov and Seamus Blake, as well as with his own trio or quintet.
