Sharel Cassity

Sharel Cassity (* 10. February 1978 in Iowa City , Iowa ) is an American jazz musician ( Alt - tenor - and soprano saxophone , flute ).

Cassity, who has indigenous roots, received her first saxophone when she was eight. She attended high school in Yukon, Oklahoma. She first studied in the jazz program at the University of Central Oklahoma before moving to New York in 2000. There she received her Bachelor's degree from the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music with Vincent Herring and Steve Wilson . Then she continued her studies at the Juilliard School from 2005 . In 2008 she released her debut album Just for You , followed by Relentless (2009) and "Manhattan Romance" (2014). She has also worked in various big bands , such as the DIVA Jazz Orchestra , the Jimmy Heath Big Band, Roy Hargrove Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Sextet and its All Star Big Band as well as the Jason Hainsworth Jazz Orchestra and the Joe Chambers Moving Pictures Orchestra ( Live at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola , 2011); she has also played in smaller ensembles with Matt Garrison ( Familiar Places , 2009), Harry Whitaker , Ingrid Jensen , Mark Whitfield and Michael Dease . In 2013 she appeared with the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars around Lewis Nash , Terell Stafford and Roy Hargrove. After Tom Lord , she was involved in 16 recording sessions between 2007 and 2016.

Cassity is a professor of saxophone and piano at Elgin Community College in Elgin, Illinois; From 2016-17 she was a professor at the Qatar Music Academy in Doha, Qatar.
