Mark Whitfield

Mark Whitfield (born October 6, 1966 in Syosset , New York ) is an American guitarist of hard bop and soul jazz .

Mark Whitfield graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1987 , where he studied guitar, composition and arrangement. He began his professional career in the bands of Dizzy Gillespie , Jimmy Smith , Herbie Hancock , McCoy Tyner ; he has also worked with Art Blakey , Jack McDuff , Betty Carter , Carmen McRae , Dianne Reeves , Joe Williams , Terence Blanchard , Stanley Turrentine and Clark Terry .
In September 1990 Warner Brothers Records released his first solo album The Marksman , followed by two more albums for Warner Brothers and five for the Verve label, as well as two for Herbie Hancock's label "Transparent Music". Mark Whitfield was best known for the recordings he made under his own name for the Verve label ; In 1994 the album True Blue was created , on which the guitarist was accompanied by Kenny Kirkland , Rodney Whitaker , Jeff Tain Watts , Branford Marsalis and Nicholas Payton . 7th Ave followed in 1995. Stroll with Tommy Flanagan , Dave Holland , Christian McBride and Al Foster , 1996 the album Forever Love , in which singer Diana Krall also participated. Mark Whitfield also worked with Courtney Pine , Ernie Watts ( The Long Road Home , 1996) and Nicholas Payton ( From This Moment , 1995).
The guitarist has also worked as a session musician with artists and bands such as Mary J. Blige , Take 6 , The Roots , Chaka Khan , Al Jarreau , George Benson , BB King , Ashford and Simpson as well as with Quincy Jones for record productions.
Mark Whitfield has also worked for television and film projects, such as the TV series Moon over Miami , with Wynton Marsalis on the soundtrack for the film Tune In Tomorrow ; he also made a cameo in Robert Altman's film Kansas City . He worked with Terence Blanchard on the soundtrack for the film The Soul of the Game . His composition The Blues From Way Back (from the album The Marksman ) was used in the soundtrack of the film One Night Stand with Nastassja Kinski .
