Diana Krall
Diana Jean Krall OC , OBC (* 16th November 1964 in Nanaimo , British Columbia ) is a Canadian jazz pianist and singer . According to the sources, she has sold more than 10.5 million records in her career, over 2.4 million of them in her home country alone. Diana Krall's most successful release is the album The Look of Love with over 2.8 million units sold.
Life
Krall was born into a musical family. Her parents played the piano , her grandmother was a singer. She began piano training at the age of four. In addition to classical music , she was always surrounded by jazz music in her parents' house. As a teenager, she moved her family to Vancouver , where she played in a jazz combo in high school . When she was 15, she performed regularly in restaurants in Nanaimo .
In 1980 she had contact with the jazz bassist Ray Brown , who brought her together with influential teachers and producers in the following years. The Vancouver International Jazz Festival sponsored a study music at the age of 17 her Berklee College of Music in Boston . After three semesters she moved to Los Angeles , where the musician Jimmy Rowles refined her piano playing and introduced her to singing .
Krall went to New York in 1990 , played in numerous bars and made her breakthrough in 1993 with her debut album Stepping Out . The influential producer Tommy LiPuma became aware of her, signed her to GRP Records and created the album Only Trust Your Heart . The third album, All For You, was nominated for a Grammy in 1996 and stayed on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Charts for over 70 weeks . Love Scenes was created in a trio with Russell Malone ( guitar ) and Christian McBride ( bass ) and became a hit album in the late 1990s.
When I Look in Your Eyes catches the eye with its large orchestra accompaniment and underlines their love of variation and innovation of old jazz standards . The album was nominated for several Grammys. She received the music award in the category "Best Jazz Artist of the Year". For The Look of Love she was able to win the arranger Claus Ogerman . The album went platinum several times .
In September 2001 Krall began her first world tour. After the six studio albums, live recordings of her Paris concert were also released at the Olympia . Diana Krall - Live in Paris surpassed her old records and brought her the second Grammy in 2003 for the best vocal jazz album and another JUNO award. John Clayton (bass) and Jeff Hamilton (drums), who had already accompanied them on their debut album, were among their regulars.
In December 2003 she married the British musician and songwriter Elvis Costello , with whose support she began to write and compose. Together they worked on the album The Girl in the Other Room , which was released in April 2004. Diana Krall describes Carmen McRae and especially Nat King Cole , who were also singers and pianists, as her role models . In 2006 she gave birth to twins in New York.
In March 2009 she released the Bossa Nova influenced album Quiet Nights . In the same year, the Krall-produced album Love Is the Answer by Barbra Streisand was released in September . She also appeared with the song Bye Bye Blackbird in an appearance in the feature film Public Enemies .
Diana Krall accompanied Paul McCartney on his 2012 album Kisses on the Bottom , which has strong jazz influences.
