Russell Malone (born November 8, 1963 in Albany , Georgia) is an American modern jazz guitarist .

Malone, who comes from a religious family, gained his first experience of playing gospel in church and then played in rhythm and blues bands. He worked with Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson and from 1988 with Jimmy Smith , before he was part of Harry Connick's big band for several years from 1990 . In 1992 he played his debut album "Russell Malone", on which Milt Hinton accompanied him. In 1994 he presented his quartet in Europe and Asia. He starred in the feature film Kansas City (1996). In the next few years he mainly worked in the groups of Diana Krall and Benny Green . In 2001 he toured with the trio of Monty Alexander and Ray Brown , the next year with Benny Green. He also worked on recordings by Roy Hargrove , Gary Bartz , Stephen Scott, Etta James and Don Braden and appeared in the Golden Striker Trio with Ron Carter and Mulgrew Miller and from 2008 to 2009 in a duo with Bill Frisell .
