David Wong

David Wong (* 1911 in Wuzhou , China ; † September 16, 2008 in Alhambra , California ) was an architect and the thirteenth president of the Baptist World Federation from 1975 to 1980 .

Life

David Wong came from Wuzhou, later lived in Guangzhou and moved to the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong in 1949 . In addition to his work as an architect, he was involved on a national and international level within the Baptist church community. Among other things, he worked as president of the Asian Baptist Federation , as director of the international men's work of the Baptist World Federation and was elected the thirteenth president of this free-church umbrella organization at the Stockholm World Congress in 1975 . He held this highest office of the Baptist World Federation until 1980, of which he was the first Asian president as well as the first non-theologian in this leadership position.

During Wong's tenure, there were profound structural changes in the World Federation, which were largely initiated by him. During his term of office, the younger Baptist unions of the Asian and African regions received greater influence within the world union. Wong also founded the Evangelism and Education Department , which provides material and personal support to the missionary and educational work of Baptists in all regions of the world. Wong visited almost 70 states in his capacity as the representative head of the Baptist World Federation.
