Denzal Sinclaire

Denzal Sinclaire (actually Densil Pinnock , * 1969 in Toronto ) is a Canadian jazz singer with a baritone voice (also piano, guitar, drums, composition), stylistically in the tradition of Nat King Cole . "His trademarks are his elegant phrasing and his talent for singing stylishly in front of or behind the beat ."

Live and act

Sincaire grew up in Montreal and studied at McGill University in the jazz performance program, with whose student ensemble the first recordings were made in 1988 (still under his real name Densil Pinnock ). In 1992 he recorded his debut album I Waited for You for Uptown Records . He has performed at numerous Canadian festivals over the course of his career; also in TV shows (also outside of Canada such as Late Night and Manu Katché's Show One Shot Not ). He also appeared in the musical Unforgettable , which themed Nat King Cole's life and music, also in Tapestry: The Music of Carole King (Arts Club Theater) and in William Saroyan's play The Time of Your Life (Soul Pepper Theater Company); He has also appeared in television and feature films such as Battlestar Galactica (Director: Michael Rymer ) and Being Julia (Director: István Szabó ).

For many years he worked with the guitarist, composer and arranger Bill Coon . In 1994 they made a joint album, and in 1996 a studio recording for BRAVO! TV. He has also worked with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra , Patrice Rushen , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Janis Siegel , Kevin Mahogany , Michael Feinstein , Bob Mintzer , Barry Harris , the Count Basie Orchestra , Cleo Laine , John Dankworth , Jamie Lidell , Holly Cole , Vince Giordano , Karin Plato , the David Berger Jazz Orchestra and the WDR Big Band Cologne . In 2001 he recorded the album I Found Love (Universal) and in 2003, now as Denzal Sinclaire , a self-titled album for Verve Records , on which he is accompanied by Bruno Hubert (piano), Reuben Rogers (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson . In 2005 there was a second production for Verve, My One and Only Love , with Brad Turner , Seamus Blake , Russell Malone , Reuben Rogers and Gregory Hutchinson. In the following years he was guest vocalist for recordings a. a. by Joel Haynes, The B3 Kings , Dione Taylor , Claude Diallo and Karl Jannuska . In the field of jazz he was involved in 18 recording sessions between 1988 and 2016.

Awards

Denzal Sinclaire's album I Found Love was nominated for a Juno Award in 2000; the follow-up album received the National Jazz Award in the category Best Album in 2004. The Jazz Report Magazine awarded him four times as the best male jazz vocalist; In 2007 he received the French Choc Jazzman Award for My One and Only Love .
