Kevin Dean (musician)

Kevin Dean (* 1954 in Mason City , Iowa ) is an American jazz musician (trumpet, organ, composition) and university lecturer living in Canada .

Live and act

Dean earned a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Iowa in 1976 and a master's degree in jazz education from the University of Miami in 1980 . He then taught at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia , where he helped set up the first university jazz program in Canada. In 1984 he was appointed professor at McGill University in Montréal , where he developed a jazz curriculum and a master's program in jazz performance. In 1986 he co-founded the Jazz Association of Montreal and was its first chairman. He also taught at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops from 1984 to 1996 and has released six albums under his own name so far (2011). In 1991 he made his debut album Minor Indiscretions (McGill Records) with his own compositions. In 1998 he recorded Venous Lake ( Gemini Records ) with guitarist Louis Stewart and bassist Neil Swainson . During his career he also played with Jimmy Heath , Benny Golson , Joe Henderson and Barry Harris . In addition to the trumpet, Dean also plays the Hammond organ and leads an organ quartet with which he recorded the 2003 Kevin Dean Organ Band, Live at Upstairs . His composition "Andre's Footsteps" is one of seven jazz pieces on a CD box that the Canada Council for the Arts released on the 50th anniversary of the United Nations .
