Mammillaria barbata is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet barbata means '(Latin barbatus) bearded'.

description

Mammillaria barbata grows individually or with many heads and forms dense cushions. The individual plant bodies are depressed, spherical to short cylindrical in shape and about 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter. The warts are soft, spherical to cylindrical and have no milky juice . The axillae are bare. The 1 to 4  central spines are stiffly protruding, brown to reddish-brown or orange-brown and up to 2 centimeters long. 1 to 2 of them are strongly hooked. The 16 to 60 radial spines are in several rows. They are usually hairy, whitish to yellowish, sometimes pointed darker and 0.6 to 0.8 inches long.

The flowers are 1.5 to 3 centimeters long with just as much diameter. They are light pink to yellowish, pink to orange or brownish to greenish. The outer perianth segments are ciliated. The elongated green to purple red or dark red fruits are up to 1 centimeter in diameter and contain dark reddish-brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria barbata is distributed in the US states of Arizona and New Mexico as well as in the Mexican states of Chihuahua , Sonora and Durango .

The first description was in 1848 by George Engelmann .
