Patrice Rushen (* 30th September 1954 in Los Angeles / California ) is an American rhythm-and-blues - singer , pianist and composer .

Life

Rushen received classical piano training from the age of three. In 1972 she won a solo competition at the Monterey Jazz Festival and received a contract with Prestige Records , where she released three albums. In 1978 she came to Elektra Records , where another five albums were released. With titles like Haven't You Heard , Forget Me Nots , Feels So Real , Watch Out , You Remind Me and Never Gonna Give You Up , she reached the top ten of the rhythm and blues charts. The track Forget Me Nots , for which she received a Grammy nomination , was used as a sample several times, for example for the theme song of the film Men in Black .

In 1978 worked Rushen on debut album For You by Prince with and since the mid-1990s she regularly works with the group The Meeting , next to Stevie Wonder , Herbie Hancock , Lionel Hampton , Carlos Santana , George Benson , Jean-Luc Ponty , Tom Jones , Nancy Wilson , Michael Jackson , Dianne Reeves , Sheena Easton , Stanley Turrentine , Lee Ritenour and Joshua Redman .

Rushen has composed the music for various television films and series such as Emmy- nominated The Killing Yard (with Alan Alda ) and Just A Dream, as well as Our America , which received the Sundance Film Award ; also for movies like Waiting To Exhale , Without You I'm Nothing and Robert Townsend's Hollywood Shuffle . She was also musical director of CBS - talk show The Midnight Hour and the world tour of Janet Jackson .

In 2000/2001 she was composer in residence with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and has since composed several orchestral works, including a symphony . In addition, she devotes herself to the musical promotion of young people in Los Angeles, including in NARAS's Grammy In The Schools program .
