Karl Jannuska (born December 31, 1975 in Altona, Canada ) is a Canadian jazz musician ( drums , composition ).

Live and act

Jannuska found his way in music early on. First he took drum lessons from a high school teacher in Thompson, and after the family moved to Brandon, he received private lessons from Brent Campbell, Jason Munroe and Doug Sullivan. In 1993 he moved to Montreal for a bachelor's degree in jazz drummer from McGill University ; then he moved to New York to take lessons from Tom Rainey .

Because of love, he moved to Paris in 2001, where he has been at home ever since. He is one of the sought-after drummers on the French jazz scene, with musicians such as Kenny Wheeler , Lee Konitz , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Paolo Fresu , David Linx , Baptiste Trotignon , Stéphane Belmondo , Alain Jean-Marie , Randy Brecker , Enrico Pieranunzi , Brad Mehldau , Lionel Loueke , David Liebman , Bojan Z , Manuel Rocheman , Laurent Coq , Manu Codjia , Émile Parisien , François Moutin , Ben Monder , François Théberge , Yaron Herman , Ingrid Jensen , Franck Amsallem , Géraldine Laurent , Niels Lan Doky and Sara Lazarus . He has been involved in more than 70 recordings, for example with the Paris Jazz Big Band , Pierre de Bethmann , Sheila Jordan , Michel Donato , Olivier Bogé , Sophie Alour , Michael Felberbaum, Jean-Luc Fillon , Nicolas Kummert , Fredrika Stahl , Tony Paeleman or Sofie Sörman. Since 2004 he has published as a band leader and composer under his own name. He played with Christophe Panzani , Pierre Perchaud and Tony Paeleman in the band The Watershed . On his albums Streaming (2010), The Halfway Tree (2012) and Midseason (2016) he also presented the Canadian singer Sienna Dahlen, with whom he has been working since 2008.

Prizes and awards

Jannuska's album Liberating Vibes was awarded an Opus prize for “Jazz and World Music Recording of the Year”. He also won the CBC Etoiles Galaxie Award for the best original composition at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal 2004 . In 2011 and 2013 he was a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC). In 2012 his album The Halfway Tree received a Chock in the May issue of Jazz Magazine . He was involved as a sideman on Nicolas Moreaux's Somewhere album , which received the Académie Charles-Cros Grand Prix Jazz in 2013 .
