François Moutin
François Moutin (* 24. December 1961 in Paris ) is a French jazz - bassist .
Moutin played guitar and piano as a child before moving on to bass. He studied mathematics and physics, also obtained a doctorate in physics, before he decided to pursue a professional music career in 1985. He was a member of the Martial Solal's Trio and founded the Quintet Moutin in 1990 with his twin brother, the drummer Louis Moutin , from which the Moutin Réunion Quartet emerged .
The list of musicians with whom Moutin worked is long and includes names such as Martial Solal , Michel Portal , Antoine Hervé , Daniel Humair , André Ceccarelli , Éric Le Lann , Jean-Michel Pilc or Christian Escoudé . He has also performed with Peter Erskine , Randy Brecker , Niels Lan Doky , Mino Cinelu , Dave Liebman , John Abercrombie , Toots Thielemans , Didier Lockwood , Larry Schneider , Aldo Romano , James Moody , Terri Lyne Carrington , Richard Galliano , Bernard Lubat , Aaron Scott , George Brown , Sunny Murray , Michel Legrand , Archie Shepp , Claude Nougaro , Trilok Gurtu , Bob Berg , Biréli Lagrène , Vladimir Cosma , Marius Constant and Markus Stockhausen . He took part in all major jazz festivals in Europe and traveled to more than thirty countries.
In 1997 he moved to New York City , where he became a permanent member of Jean-Michel Pilc's jazz trio. He has also performed with greats from the New York jazz scene such as James Hurt , Ari Hoenig , Greg Tardy , Gene Jackson , Dave Binney , Rudresh Mahanthappa , Vijay Iyer , Adam Rogers , David Gilmore , Ben Monder , Billy Drews , Jamie Haddad , Steve Hass , Frank Wess , Jimmy Heath , Monty Alexander , Benny Powell , Richie Beirach , Dave Liebman , Clark Terry , Oliver Lake , Harry Belafonte , Odean Pope , Don Alias , Rick Margitza and Mike Stern and also worked with the Arab musician Simon Shaheen .
In 2005 he and his brother received the Prix Django Reinhardt .
