Ari Hoenig
Ari Hoenig (born November 13, 1973 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz musician ( drums ).
Live and act
Hoenig, the son of a conductor and a violinist and pianist, received violin and piano training as a child before switching to drums at the age of twelve. While he was in high school, he performed at Ortlieb's Jazz House , a jazz club in Philadelphia with musicians such as Sam Dockery , Robert "Bootsie" Barnes , Mickey Roker and Bobby Durham .
In the early 1990s he studied at the University of North Texas with the drummer Ed Soph and played in the jazz band One O'clock , with whom he made his first recordings in 1994. In 1995 he moved to William Patterson College in New Jersey and began working with the organist Shirley Scott . He became a member of the trio of Jean-Michel Pilc and Kenny Werner . He has also worked with musicians such as Josh Roseman , Joe Lovano , Gerry Mulligan , Pat Metheny , Dave Holland , Wynton Marsalis , Pat Martino , Joshua Redman , Wayne Krantz , Richard Bona , Chris Potter , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Mike Stern , Gilad Hekselman and The Jazz Mandolin Project . In the field of jazz he was involved in 72 recording sessions between 1994 and 2017.
In 2002 he founded his own quartet with Jacques Schwarz-Bart , Jean-Michel Pilc and Johannes Weidenmüller (later Matt Penman ). After the solo albums Time Travels (2000) and The Life of a Day (2002), the first album with his quartet The Painter was released in 2004 , Lines of Oppression (Naïve) in 2011 . In 2013 he and his quartet won the BMW Welt Jazz Award . In 2018/19 he played in a trio with Nitai Hershkovits and Or Bareket .
