Life and music

Born and raised in Israel, Nitai Hershkovits began taking clarinet lessons at the age of 12 , and switched to piano three years later. His first contact with jazz was through the music of Wynton Kelly and Sonny Clarks . At the age of 17 he moved to Tel Aviv , where, in addition to regular school education, he received jazz piano lessons from Amit Golan and Yuval Cohen . In the following two years Hershkovits also studied classical piano and music theory with the Israeli composer Menahem Weisenberg and with Shoshana Cohen and Amir Pedorovits.

Nitai Hershkovits was awarded the Israel-American Music Foundation's top prize four times between 2004 and 2010. He also received the 2009 Chase Scholarship Award, which enabled him to study for a BA at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music.

In addition to Avishai Cohen, Hershkovits worked with, among others, Jorge Rossy , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Greg Tardy , Charles Davis , Mark Guiliana , Zohar Fresco , Avi Lebovich, Daniel Zamir, Ilan Salem and Kinga Głyk .

In the 2010s, Hershkovits performed at Salle Pleyel , Konzerthaus Wien, L'Olympia Paris, Alte Oper Frankfurt , North Sea Jazz Festival , Marciac Jazz Festival, Antibes Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne , Montreux Jazz Festival and The Barbican Center.

Nitai Hershkovits has made a name for himself primarily through his collaboration with bassist and composer Avishai Cohen in the studio and on tour. After the duo album “Duende” (EMI / Blue Note / 2012), the trio's studio project “From Darkness” (Razdaz Records / 2015) was released.

In October 2015, Hershkovits surprisingly announced on Facebook that he was leaving the Avishai Cohen Trio, which was currently on a European tour and only took a short break of a few days between two concerts. He justified this with wanting to take the "next step" after many years as a sideman. In 2018/19 he belongs to the trio of the drummer Ari Hoenig , then to the quartet of Oded Tzur .
