Mark Guiliana (born September 2, 1980 in Florham Park ) is an American drummer . The musician, who lives in New York City, plays mainly jazz , but appears in other genres as well.

Life

Mark Guiliana is from New Jersey and began taking drum lessons at the age of 15. After playing in several bands during his school days, he finally studied jazz at William Patterson University . In the following years he was engaged by various musicians and between 2003 and 2008 he recorded six albums with Avishai Cohen, among others . Guiliana later founded his own label Beat Music Productions , on which he published under his own name. The experimental band Heernt was also based on his initiative.

Together with Brad Mehldau he founded the duo Mehliana, which released their debut album Taming the Dragon in 2014 . In the New York Times , Nate Chinen Guiliana pointed out that he was the ideal partner for Mehldau's rhythmic experiments and found that a “cult following” had formed around the young drummer. According to Guiliana, the duo's focus was on improvisation , but a sound palette had already been determined in advance. During this time he himself felt more at home in electronic music than in jazz.

Around 2015 Mark Guiliana worked with David Bowie and was part of the band that recorded his last album, Blackstar , which was released in January 2016. With this band he also later recorded another Bowie-inspired album, which is also dedicated to this. It was released in October of the same year as Beyond Now under the name of saxophonist Donny McCaslin .

According to his own account, Guiliana was initially impressed by rock drummers like Dave Grohl or Chad Smith as a teenager before he discovered jazz for himself. Here he names Tony Williams , Elvin Jones , Roy Haynes and Art Blakey as influences . Later electronic music changed his way of thinking significantly due to its orchestration and the required discipline. Even with electronic music, however, he always tries to incorporate improvisation.
