Chad Gaylord Smith (born October 25, 1961 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is an American drummer and member of the California funk rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers . He grew up in Bloomfield Hills , Michigan. He replaced Jack Irons in 1988 , who left the band because of Hillel Slovak's death and the resulting chaotic circumstances. As an unnamed applicant for the position of freelance drummer, he succeeded in joining the group through a jam with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, in which his unique skills enabled him to fit into the band mechanics immediately. In 1993 he released an educational film for advanced drummers called " Red Hot Rhythm Method " .

He is often said to have an outward resemblance to the comedian and actor Will Ferrell . This running gag culminated in a drum duel on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show on May 22, 2014 , during which money was raised for charity.

In 1994 Smith married Maria St. John (artist), with whom he has a daughter Manon (1997). The couple divorced in 1998. In 2004 Smith married the architect Nancy Mack with whom he has a son Cole Madison (2005). He has two other children from other relationships: son Justin (1997) and daughter Ava (2001).

His skills as a drummer can also be seen in his participation in many albums outside of working with the Red Hot Chili Peppers : Between 2007 and 2008 he was a drummer in a jazz band in Japan. Since September 2008 he worked in the new supergroup Chickenfoot (with Sammy Hagar , Michael Anthony and Joe Satriani ) on an album called Chickenfoot, which was released on June 5, 2009 in the USA. The follow-up album is Chickenfoot III , which will be available from September 23, 2011. In autumn 2009 the CD Meet the Meatbats was released by the Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats . Here Smith proves the successful synthesis of funk drumming and fusion jazz. In 2016 Rolling Stone listed him 64th of the 100 best drummers of all time .

Equipment

Chad Smith is in the Guinness Book of Records with the largest percussion set, consisting of 308 drums and cymbals. Since March 2016 he has been playing drum sets from the manufacturer Drum Workshop , cymbals from Sabian and drumsticks from Vater. The latter two manufacturers have signature instruments from Smith in their range. Chris Warren is responsible for the equipment when performing live.
