What hits !? (English for: “Which hits !?”) is a best-of album by the American alternative rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers . It was released on September 29, 1992 on the EMI Records label.

Most of the songs on the album are previously released singles from the five studio albums released by the band up to that point. These are The Red Hot Chili Peppers (two songs), Freaky Styley (five tracks), The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (four songs), Mother's Milk (five songs ) and Blood Sugar Sex Magik (one song). Also includes Show Me Your Soul, a song from the soundtrack to Pretty Woman .

The songs chosen for compilation were produced by five different producers. The largest share comes from Michael Beinhorn , who produced the eight songs taken from the albums Mother's Milk and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan . George Clinton contributed the five productions of the tracks on the album Freaky Styley and two instrumentals (from the album Red Hot Chili Peppers ) were produced by Andy Gill. Also produced Rick Rubin , the piece Under the Bridge and Norwood Fisher titled Show Me Your Soul .

Cover design

The album cover shows the body of Anthony Kiedis , singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, in black and white. He tenses his muscles and is only wearing underpants, but his face cannot be seen. The best-of album reached position 22 in the USA and left the charts after 30 weeks. In Germany, the record could not place in the top 100.

The song Behind the Sun , which was already included on the 1987 album The Uplift Mofo Party Plan , was released as a single . The song couldn't get into the charts.

Sales figures and awards

For more than one million copies sold, What Hits !? Awarded a platinum record in the USA in 1993 . In the UK, the album received a gold record for over 100,000 units sold in 2001 .

VHS / DVD

On the same day, a VHS was also released under the same name, which contains 11 music videos released up to that point and three songs played live by the group. In 2002 this version was also released on DVD .
