Road Trippin ' is a song by the American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers from their 1999 album Californication . It was released as the fifth single in 2000 and was the fifteenth and final track on the album.
background
The single was only released in Europe. A music video was shot but not released in the United States until the 2003 Greatest Hits album was released. In addition, two versions of the single were released in the UK, but only one of them was circulated in other countries. A third version was issued in Australia. Presumably due to its exclusive release in Europe, the track is one of the band's least well-known singles.
The song describes an excursion on the Pacific coast of the United States. Singer Anthony Kiedis , guitarist John Frusciante and bassist Michael Balzary surfed Big Sur after Frusciante returned to the band. Drummer Chad Smith did not take part in the excursion because he had other business and was not interested in surfing. The piece is acoustic and as one of the few songs (like Lovin and Touchin , Thirty Dirty Birds , Pea or If ) the band does not use drums. Therefore, the drummer Chad Smith can only be seen briefly halfway through the video.
The song was advertised at the start of the second season of the series Cold Feet in 1999.
Live performances
Road Trippin ' has only been played live four times so far, most recently in 2004. The current guitarist Josh Klinghoffer played the song briefly during the band's I'm with You tour in 2012 .
