I'm with You is the tenth studio album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers . It was released on August 26, 2011 in Germany and on August 29, 2011 in Great Britain and the USA. It was the first studio album in five years and also the first studio album with their new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer . The album consists of 14 tracks. The cover was designed by Damien Hirst .

Music genre

The band's bass player, Flea , described the album as "very rocky and funky", and it also contained "touching and profound songs". The German edition of Rolling Stone also performed funk elements as a hallmark of some tracks on the album, in addition to the "melody bliss", which is reminiscent of refrains from Stadium Arcadium , and praised the background vocals by Klinghoffer. In the lyrics of I'm with You , lead singer Anthony Kiedis turned to "the big questions in life", the lyrics deal with life and death, betrayal and his relationship with the outside world. Musically, criticized the reviewer Arno Frank , the band had clearly lost after the departure of their guitarist John Frusciante : "In fact, I'm with You has a hole in the exact place where the music should have its heart."

History of origin

After the Stadium Arcadium tour in August 2007, the band took a break initially planned for a year, which was later expanded. During this period, guitarist John Frusciante left the band, but this was not made public until the end of 2009. Josh Klinghoffer was named his successor at the beginning of 2010 , who had already played live with the Red Hot Chili Peppers during their tour and also worked with Frusciante.

According to drummer Chad Smith , the band members worked on songs for a new album over a period of eleven months and, despite the new guitarist, changed little in the process: "We're four guys playing in the same room." According to Flea the songwriting was different than before, when he wrote the songs mostly on the bass. The bassist studied music theory at the University of Southern California while on hiatus and began learning the piano. “Now on the piano I write the chords, the rhythm, the bass and a melody. It's a completely different feeling. ”Furthermore, Flea explained in an interview that the songwriting has also changed with the new band member. “He [Klinghoffer] is a completely different musician than John [Frusciante]. [...] Josh is a skilled, structural player who writes songs by playing on many different instruments. "

In February 2010, while the album was being made, Flea and Josh went on a trip to Ethiopia , where they also played with local musicians. According to Flea, she inspired the journey to the song Ethiopia and led to African musical influences on some of the songs.

Anthony Kiedis explained how the title of the album I'm with You came about. After the producer Rick Rubin had spoken out against naming the album after a single song, there was initially no idea for a title. One day before the set deadline, Klinghoffer wrote the words “I'm with You” on a piece of paper and pushed them to Kiedis, who, like the rest of the band, was enthusiastic about it.

Spin magazine awarded seven out of ten points. Mikael Wood described the album as "more concise" compared to Stadium Arcadium . The editors of laut.de also rated the record with four out of five points, author Eberhard Dobler attested it "a fresh vibe [...] that distinguishes it from other Peppers albums" and named the new guitarist Josh as the reasons for this Klinghoffer as well as “Flea's music theory studies and his newly learned piano playing”. At CDstarts.de the album achieved 7.5 out of 10 points; Arne Janßen compared the new guitarist with the old guitarist John Frusciante : "His [Klinghoffers] playing is more subtle, more song-oriented and less riff-heavy, but his guitar sounds confusingly similar to the Frusciantes," said I'm with You as a "very poppy record ", Which does contain" radio outbursts ", and mentioned the use of piano and trumpet in individual pieces.

Plattentests.de awarded seven out of ten points, making the e-zine I'm with You better than the previous album . According to the author Mark Read, the album shows "no radical break in style" like One Hot Minute after Frusciantes left ; he called I'm with You an "album that shows a deserving band aging gracefully" and suggested that the band was ready to "usher in the autumn of their careers". A feature of the album is Flea's “driving bass”, as in the first two songs , while the guitar “hides discreetly in the background”, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers also dared to approach quieter pieces. This criticism also praised the use of the piano. The highlights of the album were Brendan's Death Song and Even You Brutus? mentioned.
