Otherside ( English for " other side ") is a song by the American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers . The song is the third single from their seventh studio album Californication and was released on January 11, 2000.
content
Otherside addresses the fight against drug addiction and a possible way out in death or a drug-free life. The text is mostly cryptic and ambiguous . The topic has a real band connection: For example, the former guitarist Hillel Slovak died in 1988 of a heroin overdose and the band members Flea , John Frusciante and Anthony Kiedis were addicted to drugs for years.
“How long, how long will I slide?
Separate my side
I don't, I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat, it's all I ever ”
production
The song was produced by the American music producer Rick Rubin . The four band members Flea , John Frusciante , Anthony Kiedis and Chad Smith acted as authors .
Music video
In the music video shot on Otherside , which was used by the German expressionist silent film Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari was inspired by American directors duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris . It is partly in black and white and contains elements of Cubism and works by the artist MC Escher . The video has over 490 million views on YouTube (as of August 2020).
It has a comic book-like plot that revolves around a young man who is anesthetized in the hospital and dreams. In his dream he first fights a monster, then another human and finally a raven. The band members are in unusual places: Anthony Kiedis sings in a tower, while John Frusciante plays on a rope in a corridor, similar to a guitar. Flea hangs on power lines and plays them like a guitar, and Chad Smith drums on a rotating medieval tower clock.
