Give It Away is a rock song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the lead single on the album Blood Sugar Sex Magik , from which it was released in September 1991. The piece reached number 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the band's first number one on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and number 9 on the UK Top 40 . The song is one of the band's best-known pieces, and the accompanying music video earned them continuous attention on music television for the first time. The piece won a Grammy Award in 1993.

music

The funk- influenced alternative rock song features a solo played backwards by guitarist John Frusciante . The hard final riff at the outro, inspired by the Black Sabbath song Sweet Leaf , also set itself apart from Kiedis' vocal hyperactivity , according to Allmusic .

background

The piece was written by the band, particularly guitarist John Frusciante and bassist Flea . It was made during a jam session a few months before the recordings. The lyrics were written by singer Anthony Kiedis . He refers to an experience with his former girlfriend Nina Hagen regarding altruistic behavior or selflessness. The song was recorded with producer Rick Rubin from April to June 1991 at The Mansion studio in Los Angeles .

Initially, some radio stations in the USA refused to accept the song, but it quickly received more attention , especially on music television, thanks to the video by French filmmaker Stéphane Sednaoui .

The B-side of the 1991 single contained the track Soul to Squeeze , which later became a soundtrack song for the movie Coneheads .

Music video

Anthony Kiedis had searched hard for a director for the video, including material that the Warner Bros. label had made available to him, but initially failed to find the right one: "I started viewing reels and reels and reels of video directors but nothing looked good to me. Everything was the same, boring, homogenized, contrived shit. " When he saw pictures of Sednaoui, he felt that they were like nothing seen before, "like nothing else. It was slower and poetic, shot in black and white. It seemed like authentic art, not something shot for MTV ." The band members are in black and white video turned around jumping with silver body painting to be seen.

Awards

The song won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance .
