Joshua Adam "Josh" Klinghoffer (born October 3, 1979 ) is an American multi-instrumentalist and music producer. From John Frusciante's departure in 2008 until December 15, 2019, he was the guitarist of the Californian funk rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers . He also founded the experimental band Dot Hacker and was a member of Ataxia , The Bicycle Thief and Warpaint .

He toured and recorded songs with artists such as Sophie Hunger , Gnarls Barkley , PJ Harvey , Beck , Butthole Surfers , Michael Rother , Sparks and Vincent Gallo .

Life

Klinghoffer left school at the age of 15 and became part of the Los Angeles music scene . In retrospect, during this time he describes himself as a “little music nerd from around the corner who dropped out of school and only played guitar all day”. At the age of 17 he joined the band The Bicycle Thief , the music project of the Thelonious Monster front man Bob Forrest. It was here that Klinghoffer gained his first studio experience.

In 2002 he began writing music with then Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante. The first common song Omission appeared in 2004 on Frusciantes album Shadows Collide With People . Further recordings followed, and together they recorded Frusciantes solo albums The Will to Death , Inside of Emptiness and A Sphere in the Heart of Silence as well as the albums Automatic Writing and AW II with the Fugazi bassist Joe Lally under the band name Ataxia .

In 2007, Klinghoffer was a guest musician on the last section of the Stadium Arcadium tour of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and provided additional guitar, vocals and keyboard contributions.

The following year, 2008, he formed his own band called Dot Hacker and has released two albums to date.

In 2009 Klinghoffer began to work on the recordings of the 10th studio album I'm with You by Red Hot Chili Peppers, which was finally released on August 26, 2011 in Germany and on August 29, 2011 in Great Britain and the USA. Since January 2, 2010, he has also been a permanent member of the band and took part in the extensive I'm with You World Tour from September 11, 2011, shortly after the album was released up to and including April 21, 2013 and then only after the Band names named tour.

In 2014, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, including Klinghoffer, began work on their eleventh studio album, which would later be called The Getaway . However, work had to be interrupted longer when bassist Flea broke his arm. The work was then continued or started from scratch, and the album was finally recorded within two years and released worldwide on June 17, 2016. This was followed by a longer The Getaway World Tour from 2016 to 2017 , as well as several dates in 2019.
