Californication is a song by the US crossover band Red Hot Chili Peppers . It was released on June 20, 2000 as the fourth single from the album of the same name .

Music genre

In Californication is a typical rock song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The song consists of a continuous 4/4 time with a tempo of about 93 bpm . It is kept very simple and is musically assigned to the funk . Like on the album, the song is produced by Rick Rubin . The song consists of five stanzas and three refrains.

text

The title is a Portmanteau word from "California" ( California ) and "Fornication" ( fornication ). In German it can be translated as “Kalifornisierung”. The word new creation has been used since the 1950s to describe the "haphazard, reckless population expansion in the arid areas of Southern California [s]".

The text deals with the moral and cultural decline of the western world. California and Hollywood in particular was chosen as a prime example . Using as many paradoxes as possible , the narrator tries to show how Hollywood is decaying as the “culmination point of western and occidental civilization”. The narrator himself cannot break away from it, he is also involved in the action. The theme is quite typical for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, both in terms of the reference to California (compare Dani California ), as well as from the criticism of the irresponsible society (see Under the Bridge ).

Hollywood Boulevard with the famous Walk of Fame and Kurt Cobain are mentioned in the text . The phrase "station to station" is a reference to the David Bowie album of the same name . Also Alderaan , the home planet of Princess Leia from Star Wars , is mentioned. And the earthquakes that frequently occur in California are also alluded to in the text.

Music video

The music video, released on June 5, 2000, shows the four musicians from Red Hot Chili Peppers in a kind of video game world , who fight their way through several levels before returning to the real world at the end of a joint activation of a cube. The clip is mainly computer-animated , but also contains real passages, in particular a kind of live performance by the group in front of a blue sky. As is typical for video games, the individual game passages contain a time and a point counter and, depending on the level, special navigation instruments. In addition, the live performance is shown in a small window above. Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris . The video won the directing award (“Best Direction in a Video”) and the award for best equipment (“Best Art Direction in a Video”) at the MTV Video Music Awards 2000. It was also nominated in three other categories.

controversy

It has nothing in common with the title of the television series of the same name by and with David Duchovny . In fact, the Red Hot Chili Peppers sued Showtime television for damages . The band assumed that the series benefited from the popularity of the album of the same name and would have disregarded word and trademark rights. In fact, the Red Hot Chili Peppers had not secured the name at all, and the name went back to older roots. The action was therefore dismissed.
