David William Duchovny (born August 7, 1960 in New York City ) is an American actor , writer and musician . Duchovny became internationally known for his roles as Fox Mulder in the US TV series The X-Files - The FBI's Scary Cases and as Hank Moody in Californication .

Acting career

David Duchovny graduated from Princeton and was about to get his PhD in English Literature from Yale University when he switched to acting. Parallel to his duties as a teaching assistant and working on his dissertation for Dr. phil. ("Magic and Technology in Contemporary Poetry and Prose") he took acting classes. Duchovny eventually gave preference to acting over science and turned his back on the university without quitting his work there.

Duchovny made his debut in 1987 in a commercial for Löwenbräu beer. This was followed by a few small roles in television and cinema productions. In 1990 he got a supporting role as Agent Dennis / Denise Bryson in the series Twin Peaks . Then he continued with supporting roles in several cinema productions until he was allowed to play his first major role in California in 1992 alongside Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis .

The breakthrough came in 1993 when the X-Files creator Chris Carter became aware of Duchovny and hired him to star in FBI agent Fox Mulder . In 1997 he received the Golden Globe Award for this role . In addition to his work for the X-Files , he took on a recurring role in a second series from 1992 to 1996: the erotic series Foxy Fantasies (original title: Red Shoe Diaries ), to which the constant references in the X-Files allude to Mulder's predilection for this genre. However, the idea for this came from the author duo Glen Morgan and James Wong . The same goes for Mulder's preference for Elvis Presley . The series itself was an offshoot of the TV film of the same name from 1993, in which Duchovny played one of the leading roles alongside Billy Wirth and Brigitte Bako .

Since leaving the X-Files series , David Duchovny has appeared in several cinema productions (including Return to Me with Minnie Driver , Trust the Man and Evolution with Julianne Moore , The TV Set with Sigourney Weaver , In Your Skin with Olivia Thirlby and Lili Taylor , Eine neue Chance mit Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro ) and lent his voice to the main characters in three computer games ( XIII (2003); The X Files: Resist or Serve (2004); Area 51 (2005)). In 2004 he filmed his screenplay written herself House of D . Among other things, he was able to hire Robin Williams for this project, in which Duchovny himself directed and took on a role. However, the film was not very successful.

From 2007 to 2014, Duchovny played the role of Hank Moody , the central main character, in the series Californication , which was awarded at the 2008 Golden Globe Awards . Duchovny himself also received the Golden Globe for the lead role as Hank Moody . The second X-Files film released on July 25, 2008, The X-Files: Beyond Truth . 2013 started Phantom , in which Duchovny plays alongside the multiple Oscar nominee Ed Harris . From 2015 to 2016 embodied Duchovny the LAPD - Sergeant Sam Hodiak in the crime series Aquarius . In the summer of 2015, he was back in front of the camera for six new episodes of the X-Files , which aired in early 2016. In the second half of 2017, the preliminary final season of the X-Files was filmed with 10 new episodes that aired in early 2018.

In May 2015 Duchovny released his first music album Hell Or Highwater , which contains twelve pieces composed in collaboration with the American singer-songwriter Keaton Simons . Duchovny appears in the folk-rock titles as a singer and is supported by the backing band known as Weather . On the European tour in 2016 he made guest appearances in Germany in Cologne and Munich .

Private

Duchovny's paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Ukraine , and his mother was a Lutheran immigrant from Scotland . The parents divorced when he was eleven years old. Due to several trips to his mother's homeland, he has a special relationship with Scotland.

Until June 2008, David Duchovny lived with the actress Téa Leoni (married from 1997 to 2014) and their two children in Malibu , California before they moved to New York City .

German voice actor

Benjamin Völz is the German voice actor for Duchovny . However, Duchovny was not dubbed by Völz, but by Johannes Berenz in the second movie for the X-Files , because they couldn't agree on the fee with 20th Century Fox. Sven Gerhardt took over the dubbing for the two seasons of the new edition of the X-Files .
