action

Steve and Kate Jones move to an affluent suburb with their teenage children, Mick and Jenn. They live in a luxuriously furnished house and quickly arouse the interest of the neighbors because they always have the best products and know the hippest shops. But in reality the four new residents are not a family at all. Kate is a senior executive at a marketing company and, along with her alleged relatives, is only interested in increasing sales by having the "family" point out the brands at all times.

After 30 days in the new home, KC, the boss of the company, comes to the Joneses to take stock. Steve comes off worst in terms of sales. Kate reacts upset because she thinks he's jeopardizing success. Steve, who was dissatisfied in his previous job, senses a human interest in his wrong wife and therefore tries to find a better sales strategy with multipliers . The numbers are now increasing significantly, and the Joneses are promised Icon status , the highest award for such marketing groups.

But meanwhile the exemplary "family" Jones seems to be breaking up. Mick makes friends with his inconspicuous classmate Naomi. In the absence of his alleged parents, he distributes hard alcohol to the young guests at a party and offers Naomi's brother a jaunt in his car. Naomi follows them intoxicated and is injured in a traffic accident. When Mick wants to kiss his brother, he takes a beating. Steve and Kate later defend him against a police officer, whereupon he admits his homosexuality. The nymphomaniac assessed Jenn desperately as the older neighbor Alex Bayner after a sexual affair will hear nothing more from her.

Due to his successful work at KC, Steve is given the chance to move to another "family", but he declines the offer out of sympathy for his current "relatives". Then the crisis worsens; Larry, his best friend in the neighborhood, can no longer pay the loans for the house. He has gone into debt, given its rich neighbors to his wife, who sells at parties cosmetics to impress, and commits in his pool suicide . After this shock, Steve reveals his true identity in front of the assembled neighborhood and explains how the marketing works. Kate and the children leave immediately and are integrated into a new "family". However, Steve is so in love with Kate that he goes in search of her. He finds her with a new "husband" and can finally persuade her to accompany him to his real relatives in Arizona .

background

The family name Jones was not chosen by chance. He is very common in English-speaking countries. There is also the phrase "keeping up with the Joneses", which refers to the fact that people seek greater possessions and status symbols because of comparisons with their surroundings.

The film was shot in Atlanta and other cities in the US state of Georgia .

reception

Daniela Panzitta points to the ubiquitous advertising in the modern world at Moviemaze and writes: “With The Joneses, Derrick Borte devotes himself to this amusing and thoroughly debatable question in a humorous but unfortunately somewhat too superficial manner.” However, she misses “ultimately the critical discussion ”. After all, the film "encourages you to think about how much you are influenced by offers and whether you can find your behavior patterns somewhere in the film."
