Reception in Germany
Jan Schlüter from the industry portalquotemeter.de , is critical of the series. Among other things, he wrote: “It's difficult to accept Duchovny as an LA cop. After his iconic roles in “ The X Files ” and most recently “ Californication ”, the character actor now plays the more or less brave investigator who has few rough edges and who belongs to the establishment. And has a hedgehog haircut. Unfortunately, it's a little too much of a change from the beloved Hank Moody with his mat and his quirks. It's a shame that the character Sam remains relatively pale, conventional and almost boring. ”And“ All the themes of the 60s are present, but all of them only a little, apart from Charles Manson, the main antagonist, and his hippie commune. Everything seems a little too softened, too harmless - which can also be interpreted negatively in view of the explosive substances: US critics criticize the initially harmless portrayal of Charles Manson as a simple communal leader (in truth, his sick ego comes to light later in the series ). The issue of racism is only hinted at. The assumption remains: apart from public network television, where certain rules must or want to be adhered to, «Aquarius» would have come across as more explicit, more straightforward, more relevant. Missed chance, what a shame. "
Anna Meinecke from n-tv had somewhat more praiseworthy words: “Aquarius cannot be described as subtle. In the first episodes of the series, a child is coerced into group sex and a man is almost raped by another. But “Aquarius” doesn't want to be a sensitive drama like “ Mad Men ”. It's basically a cop series. It's the story of the old hand Hodiak, his partner Brian (Gray Damon), with whom he repeatedly clashes, and the young colleague Charmain (Claire Holt). Sometimes “Aquarius” has too many storylines. The conspiracy theories about Emma's father Ken (Brian F. O'Byrne) threaten to distract from the actual conspirator Manson at the beginning of the show. Sometimes the format just focuses on the fascination of the cult of a broken man, whose madness claimed many lives. And sometimes important themes of the age such as racism, sexism and homophobia are integrated into the plot in a somewhat bumbling manner. Most of the time, however, “Aquarius” convinces with tension - even though the end of the story, at least as far as Charles Manson is concerned, is already known ”.
