Phantom is an American action film that released in theaters on March 1, 2013 in the United States . Todd Robinson wrote and directed the script and starred Ed Harris , David Duchovny and William Fichtner .

The film tells the story of a Soviet submarine captain who tries to prevent a war. It is loosely based on the rumors surrounding the submarine K-129 , which sank under unexplained circumstances near Pearl Harbor in 1968 .

action

As a long-serving submarine captain in the Soviet Navy, Demi Zubov is about to retire, but is then sent on a final secret mission by his superior Markov. He is said to be using a submarine to observe an American fleet maneuver that takes place in the Pacific at the height of the Cold War . Also on board the submarine are his first officer Alex Kozlov and the supposed technician Bruni, who is actually a KGB agent. When the submarine leaves, Markov commits suicide.

Strange things happen on the trip that Demi and Alex do carefully towards Bruni and his people, especially since their submarine contains several torpedoes, a nuclear missile and a kind of cloaking device called a phantom , which falsifies the submarine's acoustic signature and so it does for sonar location of other ships like a civilian ship or like a group of ships can sound like. When Demi asks Bruni about the background, Bruni's men threaten him with guns. Bruni is supposed to start a war between the United States and China by using the cloaking device to pretend to be a Chinese ship and then attacking the Americans with a nuclear missile. Everyone who supports Demi will be locked away with him. Demi reveals that he lost many of his people in a fire on a previous mission and has since suffered from traumatic delusions.

Demi and his people can finally break free, regain control of the boat, and send a message about their plight to another Soviet submarine. The crew members Tyrtov and Sasha try to deactivate the nuclear missile. In the bitter battle for the submarine, many men die on both sides and are eventually torpedoed by the submarine that was summoned. Badly hit and damaged, her boat sinks to the bottom of the sea. Alex is sent out in a wetsuit to get help. The other people on board fight for their lives in the smoky, poisoned air. Bruni confesses to Demi that he was a member of his crew at the time and was responsible for the fire and death of the men.

Ultimately, the submarine is recovered, but all occupants are found dead. At a solemn farewell ceremony, Alex, who is now the captain himself, salutes and shows his former commander his final respect.

reception

At US cinemas, the film was only in theaters for a little over two weeks and grossed just over a million US dollars during that time. This gross profit was compared to a production budget of approximately 18 million US dollars.
