The Hotel Ukrajina ( Ukrainian готель Україна / Russian Гостиница Украина ) is a 4-star hotel on Majdan Nesalezhnosti in the Ukrainian capital Kiev .
The 66 meter high hotel building is an important architectural element in the center of Kiev opposite the October Palace .
history
The building was built in place of the "Ginsburg" high-rise, an apartment block that had been badly damaged in World War II and had existed since 1912 and had been the tallest building in the Soviet Union since 1928 .
Construction of the 16-story hotel building with 375 rooms began in 1955 and was completed with the official opening on September 28, 1961. The architect of the building was the Ukrainian Anatoly Volodymyrowytsch Dobrowolskyj.
In 2001, in honor of the 10th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, the building was renamed from “Hotel Moscow” to “Hotel Ukrajina” .
Many international media representatives stayed in the hotel during the Euromaidan events . On February 20, 2014, the hotel was at the center of escalating and violent clashes, the dead were laid out there and the injured were treated.
