Californication is a funk-rock - music album of the Californian rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers , released in June 1999th
General
Californication is the first album after Blood Sugar Sex Magik in which John Frusciante can be heard on guitar again. The recordings took place in Balzary's garage. The sound quality was criticized in places due to clipping in the high frequency range. Even so, over 10 million copies were sold worldwide.
The album marks a turning point in the biography of all band members. By the time it was released, they had all overcome years of drug addiction.
Meaning of the album title
The word "Californication" is a portmanteau of the English name of the State of California - and the English word for "fornication" ( fornication ). The play on words originated in the 1970s and 1980s when, due to the growing influence of California through the construction of Interstate 5 and the large immigration of Californians, stickers with the inscription "Don't californicate Oregon" were to be read on the cars in the northern neighboring state of Oregon .
Anthony Kiedis underlines, however, that the album title has nothing to do with this play on words, but is an independent new creation.
Sound quality
Californication is a well-known example of the loudness war . So the album shows not only the usual low dynamics , but even significant overmodulation .
The Guardian's Tim Anderson complained about "excessive compression and distortion" caused by digital mastering.
In the online magazine Stylus , the album was described as a "victim of the loudness war". The album would suffer so much from digital distortion that even non- audiophile listeners would have complained about the poor sound quality. An online petition has existed since November 2005, calling for a technical revision. So far there have been 1953 signatures (as of July 4, 2012).
