Michael Anthony (born June 20, 1954 in Chicago , Illinois ; actually Michael Anthony Sobolewski ) is an American musician. He is the bass player for the supergroup Chickenfoot , which released their debut album in 2009. Anthony was already known as a member of the American early hard rock band Van Halen , of which he was a member from 1974 to 2005.

Life

Michael Anthony was born in Chicago in 1954, the second of five children. At the age of seven he learned to play the trumpet . When the family moved to Arcadia , California , he attended Dana Junior High School in his new hometown from 1967 to 1969 , where he played in the school's marching band . As a teenager, he was initially interested in the guitar , but later decided on the bass as his future instrument.

From 1969 onwards he attended high school in Arcadia. He belonged to different bands ("Poverty's Children", "Black Opal", "Balls" and "Snake"). "Snake" played among other things as the opening act for a concert by the band "Mammoth", which took place at Pasadena High School in Pasadena . "Mammoth" at that time consisted of Eddie (guitar, vocals ) and Alex Van Halen ( drums ) as well as bassist Mark Stone.

After graduating from high school, Michael Anthony attended Pasadena City College , where he graduated with a degree in music. When Mark Stone had to leave "Mammoth" in 1974, Anthony accepted the offer to replace him. The band renamed themselves a little later in "Van Halen".

Van Halen

Anthony was a member of the band from 1974 to 2005 and saw David Lee Roth , Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone singing the group. Even when Van Halen had no new publications to show from 1999 to 2003, he remained a member of the group, despite repeated rumors that he had been fired. His last publication with Van Halen was Van Halen III ; he was no longer involved in the recordings for the new tracks on the best-of- album Best of Both Worlds 2004, but still played the subsequent tour with the group. Wolfgang Van Halen has been the bassist in his father's band since 2006 .

Chickenfoot

Anthony has been a member of Chickenfoot since 2008. Even before the founding of this band, which also includes Sammy Hagar, guitarist Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith , Anthony had repeatedly played in performances by Hagar and his band, "The Wabos". Usually in the second half of a concert he was one of the musicians who introduced this part of the concert with Van Halen songs.

With Chickenfoot, Anthony has released two albums ( Chickenfoot , “ Chickenfoot III ”) and a live DVD. The debut album was # 4 in the US, # 17 in Germany and # 23 in the UK .

Anthony has been married since 1981 and has two children.
