biography

Gary Cherone grew up as the third of five brothers near Boston , USA . He is the younger of a pair of twins . He had to give up his dream of a baseball career after a knee injury.

As a teenager , Gary Cherone began singing in local bands and was influenced by the greats of the time such as Roger Daltrey from The Who , Steven Tyler from Aerosmith and Queen Freddie Mercury . In 1979 he and his drummer friend , Paul Geary, formed a band called Adrenalin together with guitarist Matt McKay . Adrenalin changed the name to The Dream in 1981 and recorded an EP with a total of six titles with this band name .

With the band Extreme

In 1985, Gary Cherone and Paul Geary met guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and bassist Pat Badger . A new band was formed called Extreme . A&M Records signed the band and released their debut album in 1989 called Extreme .

In 1990 the band recorded their second album Extreme II: Pornography Graffiti . It contained, among other things, the number one hit More Than Words , with which Extreme achieved worldwide fame. In 1991 they went on tour as opening act for David Lee Roth .

In 1992 the band performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and was the only band to play a medley consisting of a total of eleven Queen hits. Brian May announced them with the words that extremes were real friends and the "only band on this planet that understood what Queen and Freddie Mercury made in the past". Cherone played the title Hammer to Fall with the three remaining members of the group Queen , Brian May Roger Taylor and John Deacon .

In 1993 Extreme released their third album III Sides to Every Story . In 1995 the follow-up work Waiting for the Punchline came out. During the subsequent tour of Waiting for the Punchline , the guitarist Nuno Bettencourt left the band to take a break and realize his own musical projects. A short time later, the band paused for an indefinite period instead of making a new line-up for Nuno Bettencourt.

In 2008 Extreme reactivated to play live again and record the album Saudades de Rock and then go on a world tour, in 2010 the band released a live album and the DVD entitled Take Us Alive .

With the band Van Halen

In autumn 1996, after the singer Sammy Hagar had left the band Van Halen and the planned reunion with founding member David Lee Roth had not yet taken place, Van Halen found themselves without a singer. Gary Cherone was invited to audition. Eddie Van Halen liked Cherone's singing and was hired shortly afterwards. He moved into the Van Halen guest house and wrote songs for the next year. In 1998 the album Van Halen III was released with Cherone as the front man. The album was the first in Van Halen's band history that did not receive at least double platinum status . In November 1999 Cherone had to leave the band.

When Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, it became apparent that Cherone's two-year career with the band was not significant enough for the band to have him inducted into the Hall of Fame. Only ex-singer Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony from the “old” line-up were present at the award ceremony in New York's Waldorf-Astoria . Edward Van Halen was unable to attend due to the rehab on March 8, 2007, and David Lee Roth, as well as Alex Van Halen , stayed away from the ceremony. Gary Cherone was not included in the award as the only former member of the group; However, Michael Anthony mentioned him in his acceptance speech.
