- Hurtsmile Retrogrenade (2014)

Hurtsmile is the debut album by the American band Hurtsmile of the same name and by Extreme singer Gary Cherone .

background

The band Hurtsmile was founded in 2007 by Gary Cherone and his brother Mark. The group recorded some demos that they posted on the Internet. However, the project was put on hold when the members of the band Extreme decided to make a comeback attempt. After the release of the album Saudades de Rock and the subsequent tour , Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt accepted an offer from the singer Rihanna and accompanied her on her tour. This gave Gary Cherone time to deal with Hurtsmile, and the band went into the studio to produce a full album.

publication

The album was released in Europe in January 2011 and in the United States in February 2011. It contains twelve titles with a total running time of almost fifty minutes.

Cover

The cover shows a against a black background brass knuckles in the four finger holes, the letters H, U, R and T are located. In the large opening underneath you can see teeth as if from a laughing or grinning mouth, underneath is the word "Smile".

reception

Rocks gave Hurtsmile four out of six possible points and wrote under the heading Versatility is the key :

“The initially coarse-grained Rock'n'Roll ( Stillborn , Just War Theory ) is broken up in the second part with a pinch of feather-light reggae and some queen bombast. The highlights come at the end: The rocker Slave , which hit a few hooks , the multi-layered Beyond The Garden - Kicking Against The Goads , the Jesus Would You Meet Me , reminiscent of Zeppelin's acoustic period, and the emotional story The Murder Of Daniel Faulkner testify to Cherone's musical versatility . "
