Nuno Duarte Gil Mendes Bettencourt (born September 20, 1966 in Praia da Vitória on the island of Terceira, part of the Azores ) is a Portuguese guitarist . Bettencourt is the guitarist of the funk metal group Extreme , also works as a studio guitarist for various artists and works as a composer .

life and work

Bettencourt was born in Portugal. His parents moved to Hudson, Massachusetts , United States when he was four years old.

In 1985, Bettencourt became guitarist for the band Extreme . Released in 1990, More Than Words became a number 1 hit in the US and sold well around the world. The band was later unable to build on this success. After the singer of the band, Gary Cherone , switched to the group Van Halen , Bettencourt started his solo project NUNO . The Schizophonic album received good reviews but was not a huge commercial success. Bettencourt founded the Mourning Widows group in 1997 . The album was a success in Japan, selling 45,000 copies in the first month.

According to his own statements, Bettencourt was influenced by guitarists Eddie Van Halen , Al Di Meola , Yngwie Malmsteen , Brian May and Neal Schon , as well as musically mainly by The Beatles , Brahms , Johann Sebastian Bach and Paganini .

The title Hey Now , written by Bettencourt for the band Tantric , reached eighth place in the US hot mainstream rock charts in 2004.

Bettencourt was tour guitarist for singer Rihanna on her Last Girl on Earth Tour (2010/11), her Loud Tour (2011) and her Diamonds World Tour (2013).

Trivia

Collaboration with Washburn Guitars

The American instrument manufacturer Washburn Guitars has designed its own line of guitars for Bettencourt. The guitar body is made of alder. The neck is made of maple and has an ebony fingerboard. The pickups are made by Seymour Duncan and Bill Lawrence. The guitars are equipped with a tremolo system made in Germany by Floyd Rose from Schaller .
