Assimil is originally a French company that was founded in Paris in 1929 by the self-taught Alphonse Chérel and is now headquartered in Chennevières-sur-Marne near Paris. This brand is now represented in various countries around the world.

Assimil develops and publishes foreign language courses; the first was "L'Anglais Sans Peine" (" English without effort"). Since then the variety of languages has increased steadily. Learning media for around 50 different target languages with up to 12 teaching languages are now available worldwide. There are currently 28 different languages available for German speakers. The German editing department is based in Cologne and works with freelancers on further self-study courses.

This method of teaching foreign languages is based on the natural ability to learn intuitively . It consists in the fact that the learner hears the texts in the foreign language parallel to the textbook with the foreign language text on the left and the native language text on the right. The emphasis is on using whole sentences. You start with a longer phase of passive learning ( listening / reading / understanding ) with many small repetitions, about up to half of the textbook, before the "active" part with the formation of your own first sentences in the foreign language (speaking yourself) begins.

The company name was derived from the word " assimilation ".

In Germany there are currently two different series, the “effortless” series for beginners and those returning to school ( GER level A1-B2) and the “in practice” series for advanced learners (level B2-C1). For English there is also a course for business English and additional textbooks for advanced learners.

In Germany , in contrast to France, most courses are also available for PC (including MP3 sound files).
