Neal George Joseph already (even Neal nice with metal umlaut , * 27. February 1954 in Oklahoma City ) is an American blues - and rock - guitarist . He was best known in the 1970s and 1980s through his work with the band Journey .

Career

Already as a small child he started playing the oboe and guitar. In 1971 he joined the Santana Blues Band and toured the world with the famous guitarist Carlos Santana from 1971 to 1972. At the same time he also received an offer from Eric Clapton , which he turned down in favor of Santana. Already some solos can be heard on all Santana albums of this time.

In 1973 he founded the band Journey together with ex-Santana keyboardist Gregg Rolie , with which he became known worldwide. Until 1987 he celebrated numerous successes with albums and concerts with the band. The band's best- known pieces are Wheel in the Sky , Anyway You Want It and Don't Stop Believin ' . During the existence of the band from 1973 until their interim breakup in 1987, he concentrated almost entirely on working with his colleagues. He only worked sporadically on albums by other artists. At the beginning of the 1980s he released three albums with the well-known jazz pianist and keyboardist Jan Hammer . He also released his first two solo albums at this time, but initially had little commercial success with them.

After separating from Journey, the former Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain and other musicians founded the band Bad English in 1988 , which also included Schon and the drummer Deen Castronovo (who later also joined the reunited Journey) . Already released two albums with Bad English and later a greatest hits album. At the beginning of the 1990s, several other projects were added, such as Hardline , where he played again with Castronovo. Already released two other solo albums during this time and worked on several instrumental guitar albums.

In 1996 Journey reunited, in which Schon also participated again. He is the only musician who has appeared on all Journey albums so far. In addition to Journey, however, already continued his solo activities and has released five other solo albums to date. He was nominated for a Grammy for Voice (2001) . Other projects included Soul Sirkus - a band that released their only album in 2005 and separated again shortly afterwards. Even with the Van Halen - singer Sammy Hagar , he worked for his solo album together. The Journey album Revelation was released in 2008 , followed by Eclipse in 2011.

A Les Paul guitar by Gibson, made according to his ideas and named after him, is already playing, of which only 23 were made. He also uses Paul Reed Smith guitars. He used to mainly use Godin guitars , for example on his 1995 solo album Beyond the Thunder .

In the late 1980s he produced and played his own line of Jackson Guitars .
