Santana is the third studio album by the Latin rock band Santana from San Francisco . To distinguish it from also Santana titled debut album it is also called Santana III or The Third album called. It was released on Columbia Records in September 1971 .

The album

After Abraxas was released , 17 year old Neal Schon joined the band. Santana III is the first album on which the future guitarist of Journey can be heard. He is featured with guitar solos on the two singles, Everybody's Everything and No One to Depend On , which reached positions 12 and 36 in the US charts. Further reinforcements were Thomas “Coke” Escovedo, who was supposed to temporarily replace the sick percussionist José “Chepitó” Areas, the brass section of the jazz radio band Tower of Power in Everybody's Everything and the trumpeter Luis Gasca in the Tito-Puente cover Para los Rumberos . The album was the last album by the Woodstock line-up in the "classic" Santana Latin rock sound, before there was a change in personnel with Caravanserai and a stronger focus on jazz rock .

reception

Santana was number 1 on the Billboard 200 in the United States in 1971 . It was 28 years before Carlos Santana released another number one album, Supernatural .

Ralph J. Gleason sees the album in Rolling Stone magazine on the path of its two predecessors, but without their weak moments. He thinks the brass section of the band Tower of Power and the trumpeter Luis Gasca are suitable for this type of music.

For Thom Jurek from allmusic , the album is undeservedly overshadowed by its legendary predecessor Abraxas . The two lead guitars made the band rawer, darker and more powerful. The album is "essential" Santana. He gave the album four and a half stars out of five.
