Don't Stop Believin ' became one of Journeys ' greatest commercial successes and is also her best-known song. In the US, the track reached number 8 on mainstream rock tracks and number 9 on the regular single chart , the Billboard Hot 100 . In Great Britain, the track, released in 1981, became a hit the following year after a less good entry at number 62 and reached the charts as the band's second song and the top 10. The title is still considered an evergreen and regularly hits the download charts . In January 2009 the song was awarded the platinum record .

The song was also a success from the critics' side. Kara Wright described it as a "feel-good song with a positive message and an unforgettable melody". Mike DeGagne from Allmusic described the keyboard riff at the beginning as one of the best in rock history and the song itself as the "perfect rock song".

The still great popularity of the piece is in part due to its use in numerous television series such as Laguna Beach , Family Guy , Scrubs - The Beginners , CSI: On the Trail of the Criminals , Cold Case - No Victim Is Ever Forgotten or The Sopranos . The number of downloads on iTunes more than quadrupled when the song was heard in the 2007 series finale The Sopranos Strike Back . The song made another comeback in 2009 when it was re-set to music for the pilot episode in the musical series Glee . The cover version was even able to surpass the success of Journeys in terms of chart positions and made it to number 4 in the USA and number 2 in the single charts in Great Britain. In Europe, too, the version hit the charts in numerous countries. At the 2011 Grammy Awards , the song was nominated for “Best Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals,” but it was won by the band Train . In the months of September and October 2016, the original made it to the top position of the 1980s chart edition in the German Most Wanted Charts , so the song still celebrates great success in Germany in the 2010s , although it missed the official single charts at the time .

Other new editions come from Martina McBride , Kevin Chalfant , Hanson , John Mayer , Kanye West , Fall Out Boy , Steel Panther and Mashup-Germany , among others . As a sports song, it has also become popular in recent years, including games by the Chicago White Sox , Los Angeles Dodgers, and Minnesota Twins ; After winning home games by the Detroit Red Wings , the audience regularly sings along with the line born and raised in south Detroit .

The song is featured on various compilation albums , including best-of albums by Journey. Among other things, Journey changed the line born and raised in South Detroit at a concert in Houston to born and raised right here in Houston .
