Mashup-Germany (2012)

Mashup-Germany (born March 13, 1984 in Cologne ; real name David Wessel ), also known as Ben Stilller , is a German DJ , music producer and music editor with American roots. He is one of the leading producers of mashups , through which he gained international fame.

He did not choose the pseudonym Ben Stilller as a homage to the American actor Ben Stiller , but in reference to his grandfather Ben, who was murdered in Philadelphia in the 1960s, and the novel Stiller by the Swiss writer Max Frisch .

Life

Wessel comes from Frankfurt , his current place of residence. He has been playing drums since he was twelve , has been active in various bands since the age of 14 and began to work as a DJ around the same time . He also plays the piano. In 2001 he heard a bootleg for the first time , but at that point he was still far from producing his own. Since September 2008 Mashup-Germany released its mashup - remixes , even Bastard Pop called as "Mashup-Germany" his project for free download on the Internet. He also produces suitable music videos . Between 2009 and 2012, five double albums, a best-of album and numerous single mashups were created. The mashup title Top Of The Pops 2011 [What the Fuck] achieved more than 15 million views on YouTube . With a few mashups he led the international remix charts. As a resident DJ , he plays Bootie at the world's largest mashup party series in Berlin . In the program You FM Sounds , the mashups produced by Mashup-Germany are played weekly. His mashups could be heard on other international radio stations, including Radio Fritz , N-Joy , Funkhaus Europa , 1 Live , Radio Fantasy , the British Sine FM and the US Jam FM . Mashup-Germany is now active as a DJ worldwide. Among other things, he has already been on tour twice in Brazil . He also had an appearance at the Summerjam in 2011 . He also performed with artists such as the Beginners , KIZ , Frittenbude , the DJs from Mars , Nosliw and Seeed . For Cris Cosmo , he produced the official mashup of the single Alle in einer Boot , which appeared on his 2009 album Musik für die Bewegungs . Another official mashup was created in collaboration with Mono & Nikitaman . In 2012 he and five other musicians produced the mashup album Maop , a tribute to the album Raop by Cro . On December 24, 2012, Mashup-Germany released the seventh album Made in Germany . This album contains half of the new songs from the first CD and the other half of songs from the second half of 2012.

Copyright debate

Since September 2008, Mashup-Germany has been publishing the mashup remixes produced under the name of its project "Mashup-Germany" for free download on the Internet. He regularly speaks in the media about the copyright violations that he is committing under current German law. He also suspects that he has so far encountered few legal problems on the part of the music industry, as he deliberately does not pursue any commercial purposes with his productions and publications. For example, no advertising is explicitly placed on its website, and all income from the merchandising of the MashUps is donated.

Nevertheless, his user account on YouTube , which at that time already had between ten and eleven million views, was closed in January 2011 at the initiative of the music label Warner Music Group .

In July 2015, his soundcloud account, which had recorded almost 70 million plays by then, was also deleted along with all the songs hosted there.

Mashup-Germany calls for the reform of German, European and, last but not least, worldwide copyright law . He is of the opinion that the use of protected material should be freely possible, provided that it is not for commercial purposes. He attests to a positive trend in Creative Commons licensing and the culture flat rate . In the music scene, he sees the lack of a lobby for music consumers as the greatest obstacle to rapid, but at least continuous, progress towards a moderate and liberal copyright law with regard to non-commercial exploitation.

Support from artists and their music labels

Mashup-Germany sees its mashups not in direct competition with the original music titles of the artists, but rather as a further development that even leads to the music promotion of these artists. As a result, his mashup remixes are tolerated by most artists and their music labels without first obtaining the copyright . He is now receiving support from the music labels of most German-speaking artists, who on request provide him with the studio tracks in order to be able to combine a cappella and instrumental soundtracks into new mash-up titles. In cases where separate soundtracks for the vocals are not available, he extracts the vocals from the published singles by phase inversion .

Furthermore, Mashup-Germany receives active support from various international artists who link its mashup remixes on their websites or comment positively on them, including Jimmy Eat World , Matisyahu , blink-182 , Jan Delay , Uwe Kaa , Cris Cosmo , Jamaram and die Beatsteaks . Some of these artists have asked Mashup-Germany to produce a joint mashup.
